Goodwin Race 9

The sun greeted us cheerfully on this bright and fresh Sunday morning and the wind promised a steady WNW 3-4.

My first stint as RO, I was a bit concerned by the lack of RO Asst & SB Asst, but should not have worried. Ray Burnett stepped in to assist Gary Marshall on SB and Jim Forrester to assist me for the race start in the RO… thank you!

We were a little late in starting the race, no real reason, and there was a good turn out for this early Sunday start with Sally, Steph, Renato and Johnny in full sail Lasers, Sara in the Solo and Henry & Ollie in the GP14.

At just short of half ten, the race began. Sally, Steph and Renato pre-perched on the start line all began together, followed shortly after by Sara and then Henry & Ollie. Johnny opted for an early start, and later an early finish, as he had other commitments.

The first lap took just over half an hour and on the downwind leg, back across the start line, towards buoy C, Renato and Steph had pulled ahead of the fleet. As Sally, Sara and then Henry & Ollie followed, the fleet seemed to be subsumed by Ranelagh.

The wind died off during lap two, making the downwind leg to buoy C a long one, but with good wind at the upwind marks. Still, shortening the race from the original 4 laps looked inevitable. Renato and Steph were literally neck and neck across the start line into lap three and Sally followed, avoiding an unaware rowing eight with some pretty nifty and determined sailing.

At the beginning of the third lap, the decision was taken to shorten the race, and the wind filled in for the final lap. Corrected final results were Renato first, closely followed by Steph in second, Sara third, Sally fourth and Henry & Ollie fifth. Full results on website.

Thanks to Sara and Olga for wonderful food and Happy Birthday Renato!
